Deaths in England and Wales Civil Registration commenced on 1st July 1837 and the entries below are taken from the national indexes, currently held at the Family Records Centre in London.  These indexes are arranged in quarters, ie March, June, September and December.  As deaths could be registered some days after the event, they do not always appear in the index you might expect, eg a death which occured on 30th December 1843 could appear in the national index for either December 1843 or March 1844.  Some deaths went unregistered but these represent only a very small percentage as, from 1837, burial was only permitted on the production of a death (or coroner’s) certificate.  Also, some deaths appear in the local records of the relevant registration district but, for various reasons, never made it into the national indexes.  These national indexes have been filmed and are available on microfiche in many larger libraries.  A team of volunteers is currently transcribing the indexes and placing them onto a free web site, namely http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/.
